Dr. Abraham N. Morse

Healthcare Elephants is my web site for sharing my thoughts and perspectives that come from more than 25 years working as a physician and studying the incentives, cultures and external structures that influence hospitals, insurers, physicians, and patients in the United States.  My microscope has multiple objective lenses including clinical care, patient safety, medical management, informatics, economics, engineering, and research.  I love to sniff out the narratives that sound sensible but utterly miss the real determinants of delivering and receiving care in our chaotic, expensive and often destructive healthcare system.

There are two types of elephants you will encounter here:  Issues in which there is an elephant in the room that no one wants to acknowledge and problems that reflect the challenges described in the fable of the blind men and the elephant – where many understand a part of the picture, but a coherent picture that includes all the “parts” is needed. I hope you will find my ramblings interesting and I encourage you to email me with your thoughts or comment on my posts.    -Nick
